Preparing Your Satellite Phone

Test Your Satellite Phone

FAQs

Do satellite phones work exactly the same way as cell phones?
Not quite. The major difference is the antenna on your satellite phone must have a clear line of sight to the sky. Satellite phones work best when used outside without obstructions like tall buildings, mountains or trees. For optimal results, take a 360 degree view of your surroundings, if there is anything between you and the sky, move locations. Signal strength may weaken in towns and cities or inside buildings.
Can I send text/SMS messages on my Iridium satellite phone?
Yes, text/SMS messages can be sent and received on your Iridium satellite phone. Your phone must be on to receive messages.

Can my contacts send me text messages?
Your contacts can send you messages with the Iridium messaging tool. If they want to send messages from their cell phones, they should check with their local carriers to ensure they are able to send international text messages.
Is there anywhere in the world my Iridium satellite phone won't work?
The Iridium network provides global coverage however; Iridium complies with U.S. embargo restrictions and as such is prohibited from providing products and service to the following countries: Taliban controlled Afghanistan, Cuba, Iran and North Korea.
I am going on a cruise, should I rent a satellite phone to stay in touch while on board?
Before renting a satellite phone, find out if your cruise operator supports GSM or CDMA roaming. If they do you may be able to use a cell phone. If they do not, a satellite phone is a good way to stay connected with family and co-workers while you're away. Just make sure you're at the farthest point away from the ship's antenna and you're on the deck with a clear line of sight to the sky.
Can I call 911 from my Iridium satellite phone?
If you are traveling within Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. or the U.S. Virgin Islands, you can connect to emergency services by dialing 911 or 112 from your Iridium satellite phone. 911 services are only available in the continental USA; so it's a good idea to pre-program one or more emergency numbers into your phone if you are traveling elsewhere just in case.
Can I call a toll-free number (800) from my Iridium satellite phone?
No, you cannot access 1-800 numbers from your Iridium Satellite phone.
How do my contacts reach my Iridium satellite phone?
Callers should dial their international dialing code (for example, that's 011 from North America), followed by your 12-digit Roadpost satellite phone number. For example, if your number is (8816) 5555-1234, callers from North America should dial 011 8816 5555 1234. The caller pays for the call based on the rates their long distance service provider sets to dial the 881 country code. There is no cost to you for these incoming calls. If the call does not go through, the caller's long distance service provider does not support the 881 country code.

Callers can use two-stage dialing as a great alternative. First they will dial (480) 768-2500 and then they will be prompted to input your 12-digit satellite phone number. The cost to the caller is a standard long distance call to Arizona. You pay for the call according to the rates set out by your airtime plan.
How do I make a call with my Iridium satellite phone?
  • Enter the '+' symbol on the display by pressing and holding the '0' key until the '+' symbol appears.
  • Enter the country code for the country you are calling (for example, the country code for both Canada and the U.S. is '1').
  • Enter the area code.
  • Enter the telephone number.
  • For example, to call (905) 272-5665, dial +1 905 272 5665

How do I access my voicemail?
  • Wait for the voice prompt.
  • Enter your full Iridium number (ex. 8816-314-XXXXX).
  • Interrupt the voicemail greeting by pressing the "*" key.
  • Wait for the prompt to enter your password (the last 7 digits of Iridium number by default).
Can I check my prepaid balance on my Iridium phone?
Iridium now offers SMS Balance Check, providing the ability for customers using prepaid cards to send a balance inquiry via an SMS to 2888 in order to receive their current status for no charge. This feature was created in response to customers who have asked for a visual way to see their number of minutes and days remaining before their cards expire as an alternative to the current voice-based balance check system. The voice-based system will continue to be available and both will be offered at no additional charge to allow customers to check their prepaid card balance.

To use this new feature, follow these instructions:
  1. Compose a blank SMS and send to 2888 (+2888 or 002888 will also work)
  2. An SMS response will be sent back to the device from the Iridium system.
  3. The message will contain the number of remaining ISU-PSTN minutes in the account, the number of days until the account expires, and the date and time (GMT) of expiration in English.
The SMS Prepaid Balance calculation is based on ISU-PSTN minutes will be accurate for the vast majority of subscribers, but not all. For subscribers who place a large amount of ISU-other satellite calls, the announced minutes will be higher than actual. For subscribers who place a large number of ISU-ISU calls, the SMS number will be lower than actual.

This capability works for customers using prepaid cards and 9555 or 9505A satellite phones and is available effective the date of this communication.
