Iridium Direct Internet Data
Computer + Iridium satellite phone = Internet.
Connect directly to the Internet without an independent
Internet Service Provider (ISP) and also increase the speed of email, web and
FTP applications over the Iridium network.
Direct Internet Data Service provides connectivity from a
PC, through your Iridium satellite phone, directly to the Internet through
dedicated servers at the Iridium gateway. Although the satellite channel rate
is still 2.4 Kbps, this service utilizes transparent compression, resulting in
rates up to 10 Kbps.
To use Direct Internet Data Service, you must connect a PC
to your data-capable Iridium satellite phone, and install the modem driver on
your computer. Then you'll be able to use standard software applications like
Microsoft Dial-Up Networking or
Direct Internet 2.0 software to access the Internet.
What you'll need to get started
Using an Iridium 9505 or Iridium 9505A satellite phone:
Data Kit - if your PC has a serial port or an
Iridium USB Data Kit - if you want to connect to your PC via a USB
port. If you already have an Iridium Serial Data Kit and want to connect to
your PC via a USB port you can purchase the
USB Serial Converter Cable separately.
Iridium 9555 satellite phone:
Just plug and play, a mini USB cable for data connectivity is already included.
How it Works
The Iridium satellite phone appears as an external modem to
your PC. By starting a connection through your standard software application or
the Direct Internet software, your phone will dial and initiate a connection
with the Iridium gateway through the Iridium satellite constellation. This
connection setup is similar to how a voice call is established, except a data
connection is requested and the switch will route the call to the Direct
Internet server. Once connected to the Direct Internet server you'll be online.
As you are connected to the Internet, Iridium recommends
the use of anti-virus, anti-spyware and other Internet security tools.
