Iridium Dial-Up Data
Your computer's calling.
Get dial-up connectivity through your Iridium satellite
phone to another computer, a corporate network/LAN or an Internet Service
Provider (ISP) through the phone number you provide. This service offers a data
rate of up to 2.4 Kbps.
To use Dial-Up Data Service, you must connect a PC to your
data-capable Iridium satellite phone, and install the modem driver on your
computer. Then you'll be able to use standard software applications like
Microsoft Dial-Up Networking to initiate data calls. Think of it as Iridium
replacing your landline connection.
What you'll need to get started
Using an Iridium 9505 or Iridium 9505A satellite phone:
-
Iridium Serial
Data Kit - if your PC has a serial port or an
Iridium USB Data Kit - if you want to connect to your PC via a USB
port. If you already have an Iridium Serial Data Kit and want to connect to
your PC via a USB port you can purchase the
USB Serial Converter Cable separately.
Using an
Iridium 9555 satellite phone:
-
Just plug and play, a mini USB cable for data connectivity is already included.
How it works
You are probably familiar with dial up Internet. Most
computers have an internal modem that connects to your telephone line. When you
configure a dial-up networking connection on your computer, your modem dials
and connects to another modem.
Iridium Dial-Up Data Service functions the same way. The
Iridium satellite phone appears as an external modem to your PC. When you
configure a dial-up networking connection on your computer, identify the modem
and the phone number to dial, your satellite phone will dial and initiate a
connection with the Iridium gateway through the Iridium satellite
constellation. This connection setup is similar to how a voice call is
established, except a data connection is requested. The switch at the gateway
will route the call through a modem. The modem at the Iridium gateway will then
dial into and connect to another modem.
